I live in the U.S and I am learning Spanish( I have taken it for 5 years). I have Hispanic friends and stuff but anytime I try to speak in Spanish they laugh and tell me to shutup lol (My Spanish accent is bad, I am much better at reading and writing than listening and speaking). Is the only way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in a place where they only speak the language you learn?

I started out my life speaking English, but learned Spanish when I was 10 and have been speaking it as much, if not more, than English, since then. Most of the people in my neighborhood speak only Spanish, and most of the tv/radio programs I watch and listen to are in Spanish. When I don’t speak it for awhile, I DON’T forget it, as you would assume would happen when someone stops speaking a “foreign language”. Does this mean that Spanish could also be considered my native language?

p.s: I’m NOT Hispanic. as surprising as that may seem.
