Why is it becoming a requirment almost to speak spanish in Southern California?

jam_please asked:

If I were to go to South America, I know they wouldn’t be catering to my needs and my language should I decide to become a citizen. I would have to become completely fluent – no translator would be provided. I would not be allowed automatic foodstamps, housing, welfare. I would be expected to function like everyone else, including speaking the language coherently and fluently. If the US is going to go to such great lengths to make immigrants comfortable here, shouldn’t other countries do the same for immigrants to their countries? And to visitors from other countries who live and work there? Fair is fair.

  • I Want To Learn Spanish

Because of the growing Hispanic population?

Say what you want, but English-speaking people shouldn’t complain. In any country I’m sure you will find some services offered in your language (do research before listing a whole bunch of things you’re not sure about). Try to put yourself in the position of someone who only speaks Romanian or German or Finnish or… Now, they’re truly fucked, if they have to travel abroad.

I think that people should learn the language of the country they are in it’s only fair, and respectful. I don’t get why people say it doesn’t matter. If you went to another country and didn’t make an effort to speak their language I am pretty sure they would stereotype you as the average American that has no respect for another culture. It’s funny how people defend someone not wanting to speak English, but then saying if an English speaking person goes to another country they should learn the language. It’s so hypocritical I don’t understand why people think like this, and can’t see they are being hypocrites. I think its true that they wouldn’t cater to your needs, I think you could still get by but it wouldn’t be the same as others get by here in America.

maybe if we hadn’t have stolen most of mexico’s land (california, arizona, new mexico, texas), there wouldn’t be a problem with them wanting to live there.

and americans aren’t flocking to other countries to have a better life, if we were then i’m sure we would be even lazier in not learning the language because americans are typically arrogant and think everyone should learn english. we would probably move to another country and expect them to learn our language.

our ancestors came here from another country and it took a long time to assimilate, but now i suppose you want to close the gates and not let anyone else new in? that’s awfully generous of you.

  • Kids Learning Spanish

i didn’t know it was a requirement…well, in highschools down here, there is a “foreign language” course requirement–but, i really don’t recall it ever being a requirement to learn spanish specifically, albeit most people took spanish class for lack of teachers in other language..but i digress. anyway…it would do people, all people, some good to learn other languages as that type of learning (language learning) is a very effective way to exercise and stimulate your brain.
