My friend once had a group of Mexican tourists walk up to her while she was working at Taco Bell. She was able to take all of the orders in Spanish, and we had only taken Spanish for half a year!

Being an American raised Puerto Rican who only learned to speak broken Spanish at home I didn’t have the formal tools of my language until I got to high school where I asked my guidance counselor to help me select the Spanish class I should be in and she inadvertently stuck me in Espanol 1. Espanol 1 is an advanced class of Spanish and the first book ever given to me to read was “Don Quixjote de la Mancha”. Needless to say I didn’t know a single word in this book about a crazy old Spanish gentleman dressed like a knight in shining armor who rode through-out the Spanish country side with his faithful manservant and peon. I absolutely hated the class and the teacher even more because she humiliated me in front of the entire class by calling me a “sangano” (a drone male bee or worse in Puerto Rican Spanish dialect it means a man who allows his wife to cheat on him and is considered very very offensive). She being Puerto Rican herself should have known better and I took off out of her class never to return to it again and almost hating to follow thru on learning my language. Thank God that today I didn’t do that and opted to go to the public library and learn Espanol in a private room playing records which self taught me to become as fluent as I am today where I teach conversational Spanish to all desiring to learn basic Spanish and the dialect we Puerto Rican’s talk.
