How can I improve my Spanish when I can’t get to a Spanish speaking country for talk to people?

Sky asked:

I know Spanish but I have trouble speaking it. I need practice speaking to people. I can understnad words in a sentence but I have trouble verbally forming the sentences and having a convo in Espanol.

I was thining the closest thing I can do to talk to a Spanish speaking person is to find a job where the person there speaks Spanish.

Where else can I find some Spanish people to speak to so I can improve my Spanish?

First, I’d recommend talking to your teacher.
What I did with French was to listen to French audio on movies. First, I put on subtitles, though. That helped me understand how sentences are formed. You get out a dictionary, and eventually it all makes sense.
Spanish subtitles are easier to come by, too.
Also, when you’ve got sentence constructions down, you can talk to yourself in Spanish. You may start thinking in Spanish.
I consider myself fluent in French even though I’ve never had a dream in French. I can think in French. Don’t automatically assume that because you’re not dreaming in Spanish, you’re not fluent.
But, to answer your question, you might want to start by talking to a Spanish teacher if you can find one. Talking to yourself in Spanish is always a good idea, too.
People who speak the Spanish language are around you. You’ll find them. You don’t need to go to California or Spain to find them.

First you have to realize the limitations of a software program. Software is only meant to be an aid in your study. Although a lot of software programs advertise that they will make you fluent it is impossible to completely learn using only software. Just like you can’t learn basketball or the piano by just using software.

There are several things you should be doing to mix up your learning.

    1. Get a dictionary $10.
    2. A notebook – keep a language journal. Write 2-3 sentences per day even if they are extremely simple. I am John. This is just to develop your comfort level. Also write new words you’ve learned.
    3. Read out loud. Or listen to audio of a native speaker and copy their pronunciation.
    4. Watch and listen to a lot of native speakers using movies, music, youtube videos and anything else you can find.
    5. There are almost always Spanish clubs in your city. Get together with the other members and practice.
    6. There are sites online that will allow you to connect with Spanish speakers who want to learn English and you can practice together online using video chat.

Limitations to software: You can’t ask it questions, it cannot correct you, and you cannot have an interactive conversation.

    Strengths: vocabulary building, listening comprehension

There are many ways to help improve your Spanish.

    1. I would consult with a teacher.
    2. Buy some audio CD’s or tapes to listen to.
    3. Go to a Mexican restaurant.
    4. Look at some Spanish news articles online.
    5. There’s also a really cool Spanish program you can buy for your computer. It is called Instant Immersion Spanish Deluxe. It has a lot of CD’s inside that will help you improve on basic conversation level. It requires either a webcam or a headset with a microphone attached to it. It is speech recognition.

    Buena suerte!
