I can’t say,but my 3 year old has learnt loads of Spanish from watching Dora the explorer ! She can count to ten,say hello,goodnight,teddy,pyjamas,larger,and all matter of things.

My dear,
I have been studying Spanish day and night for many years.I use it every day.I read and write it quite well.In Cuba I have a little granddaughter of about 9. She speaks it more fluently than I do although my vocabularly is much greater and I have studied Spanish much longer.Get as much exposure as possible.I joined a Sp.church and I open the services there in Spanish.Develope a love and passion and dedication for el idioma.

As you say, everyone is different, but I think that, for anyone who is serious about learning a foreign language, six months is the minimum amount of time needed.
Three months at home for theoretic study of basic vocabulary and grammar, listening- and reading comprehension. And three months at a language school – with small groups – in a country where the language in question is spoken.
Of course having a private tutor at home is a big advantage, but the result depends a lot on the quality of the tutor. It may also be quite expensive if you have to pay him/her. In my opinion any quality language course in your own country with a very rapid pace would do.
You will get better value for the money you spend on the language course abroad if you come prepared. A good non-commercial site for building an essential Spanish vocabulary is It only contains the words you HAVE to know. It is not for absolute beginners though. contains lots of interesting information for beginners.
