How Hard Is It To Learn Spanish On My Own?
Armand asked:
I will not learn Spanish in school because I already chose another language. But I still want to learn Spanish because of the huge Spanish-speaking population in the USA.
I will not learn Spanish in school because I already chose another language. But I still want to learn Spanish because of the huge Spanish-speaking population in the USA.
So, is it easy or difficult to learn Spanish on my own either through traveling to Spanish-speaking countries or computer software?

Learn Spanish Pronunciation
It is hard but you can do it. If you are in high school see if your parents will allow you to travel to a safe Spanish speaking country.
I am not 100% fluent in Spanish grammer, but speak enough now that when I am at our home in Spain and my hubby comes back to the US that I can stay there with our little girl and have no problems with the language. Also if you are lerning another language in school, it helps if it is one of the “romance languages” the verb structure is similar so the transition to Spanish may be easier. Good luck!
How To Learn Spanish Online
I think it’s one of the easier languages to learn on your own. It’s a phonetic language and the grammar is simpler than other languages. Also, many words in English have Latin roots, so that always helps.
I’d recommend picking up the course materials at a university bookstore. Get the whole package, book, tapes (!) or CDs, and the workbook.
See if you can find some native speakers to give you some feedback on what you write and say.
I find that if you do most of the exercises in the books, and you listen to and repeat after the audio for pronunciation, you can really learn a lot on your own. The rest will be honed as you read and converse more in Spanish over time.
Also, once you’ve done a few lessons, try to pick out some words from some music in Spanish. You can try to transcribe some songs and translate them and then check your work with an online translation of the lyrics. This is an excellent exercise because you try to write down what you hear, then you try to make sense of it, and many artists who sing in Spanish put their lyrics out in both Spanish and English. This is a good way to check your understanding on your own. Also, it’s a natural way to learn language – mimicry. Once you understand the lyrics and sing along, you are singing it fluently while understanding it, and reinforcing the pronunciation. It’s almost like osmosis!
Another thing that helps after you’ve advanced a little is to watch the news in Spanish after you’ve already familiarized yourself with the day’s events in English. This way, you’ll know what they’re talking about and can better follow it in Spanish.
Good luck! It’s a great endeavor and will open an amazing part of the world to you!

Ways To Learn Spanish
i bet you took french since most schools offer spanish or french as foreign languages. What helped me was that i was living with my mother (i am hispanic however spanish isn’t my first language) and my mother met a new guy and then there was the whole process of dating but lets fast foward that to when he started living with us and became one of my family. The guy (now my dad) is mexican and i had to learn spanish to communicate with him. he helped me out a lot and in turn he learned english.
moral of the story is that maybe you can try finding a friend that was like my dad. It would help you and the other guy out.
and if that doesn’t work then traveling to another country is a good idea as well. BUT BE SURE YOU KNOW THE BASIC WORDS and from there on you can expand your spanish vocabulary.
im taking french next year and i cant wait. french and spanish are similar but for me french will be a bit harder than learning spanish since your lips have to be tight while in spanish your lips are loose.

Learn Spanish Classes
It can’t be classified as “easy” or “hard”… learning Spanish is like anything in life… you have to enjoy the sights along the way, and enjoy the journey
Some resources I recommend looking into:
-Go to your local library and get the Pimsleur language CDs (Spanish I, II, and III). Do one CD per day (About an hour). This will teach you almost perfect pronunciation.
-Then, do the FSI Spanish Course. You should have excellent pronunciation by now, and have a good grasp of grammar. Have a good Spanish-to-English dictionary handy.
-Now, watch the educational TV series “Destinos” — This will teach you to hear and comprehend spoken Spanish by the time you are done.
-By now, you should be ready to start watching regular TV shows in Spanish and reading newspapers with little problem. Buy a good Spanish-to-Spanish dictionary, and download a memorization program like Supermemo or Mnemosyne to help you memorize new phrases and vocabulary.
-Start speaking to natives all you can!
Best of luck! God bless
