What’s the most effective way to fluently CONVERSE in Spanish? I live in texas and many friends speak it?

Ford Racing asked:

I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me, the most effective way to learn to speak spanish fluently. To give some background about my question, I live in a major city in what I believe is south central texas. The vast majority of my friends and other people I am around all the time, speak spanish. They obviously speak english as well, but have (what seems to be) informal conversations in spanish. I took 2 years in highschool so I remember some of the basics. I want to learn it so I am able to converse with my friends in spanish. Ya know, just have some variety.. anyway I want to learn to speak it fluently with people who have known how to speak it since they were little kids. The only time frame I guess I have is 1-3? months, now if I take another 1-3 months to have it perfect, then that is fine, just let me know what you think or ask me any questions y’all have about my requirements.
Thank You so much everybody!

Practice practice practice. The more you speak with your friends the better you will get. You have to constantly look up new words, ask them for advice, and brush up your grammar. If you only learned the basics, then you missed out on a lot of learning. 1-3 months? Try 3-4 years. You won’t be fluent in less time. You have so many tenses and words to learn. It’s not just memorizing words, it’s learning and applying grammar. You haven’t even dipped into the subjunctive pool yet, that will take you a few months to master, too.
Spanish is one of the easiest languages for English speakers to learn, but it’s still a completely different language with it’s own rules of grammar that don’t even apply to English. It’s hard, especially without schooling discipline. Just converse with your friends and try to immerse yourself in it (reading Spanish books, Spanish television, using Spanish when you think, etc.)

It’s well worth it. You just have to be willing to really apply yourself to it or else it won’t work. It will take a lot of time and dedication.

With respect, your answer is obvious: practice with your friends.

If they mock or refuse, they are not your friends.

Or before you see them, practice alone a pretend conversation with them. No one will hear you [except the Office of Homeland Security].

Get a girlfriend that doesn’t speak English. (Or boyfriend. I don’t know if you’re a boy or a girl.)

BTW your timeframe is too ambitious.

I studied Spanish for 3 years in college, plus a 6-week summer program in Mexico. I really wanted to become fluent, so I took a teaching job in Mexico (after finishing my master’s degree in international relations at Yale). I would say that after 1 year living in Mexico, I could express just about anything I wanted to say — although not always in the most colloquial way. After maybe 2 more years I would say I was fluent.

I ended up staying in Mexico for a total of 9 years. I will never “have it perfect.” I think that is impossible.

I’m not trying to be discouraging. Just sharing my own experience.

    !Suerte!

(Edit) I totally agree w/ Miss Jinxy (above) when she writes “1-3 months? Try 3-4 years.” I saw numerous people come to Mexico with the idea that they could become fluent in a month or two. Their unrealistic expectations caused them immense frustration.

Hi! I live in Texas, but in North Texas and I have a lot of Spanish speaking friends as well. I took 3 years in high school and only a semester is college and I consider myself functionally fluent. I have worked in the restaurant business since I was 17, and I’m now 20 and through conversing with native speakers every day for several hours and also having a boyfriend who was born in Mexico and raised here, I learned Spanish. The best way to learn a language is through Immersion. The world is your best classroom. I suggest you should continue associating with your friends and try speaking with them more in Spanish.

Espero que te he ayudado! Buena suerte!

    Good luck! :)

well, first thing you can do is have the people around you only speak spanish to you, this way you’ll hear it all the time, also, get books in spanish and movies, childrens books are the best because they’re easier to understand, when learning a new language youre like a baby to it. You can buy or rent a disney movie and go to set ups and put that in spanish, you can start off with movies you are fimiliar with(dont put english subtitiles on!) so you sord of already know what theyre saying and pick up the words. Then you can buy or rent disney movies youve never seen, just go to blockbuster in the family section, those are always good. Then you can get a little spanish grammar book and look at a page every night or take a little spanish class, and when your friends talk to you in spanish, youll understand more, but try to answer back and spanish and tell them to correct you in any of your mistakes, but dont be shy, becuase they started off with english that way, and you learn from your mistakes. Listening to music in spanish is good, reggaeton is fun but a lot of slang is in it, though its not bad to learn that, you should listen to slower songs like bachatas, everyone loves those! Just surround yourself with it and you will learn it in about 3 months, not fluently, but enough to have a good conversation, 3 more months and youll be good. Just remember that you have to stay constant with this, so its always in your mind, and try to think in spanish too, talk to yourslelf, you can mix english and spanish together too, talk as much spanish as possible, but is you dont know a few or a lot of word just use english. you could say something like(just and example) me gusta las flowers porque they are so linda! see, just mix it up be devoted and it will come.
