How to learn spanish?

Doug K asked:

I have always wanted to learn spanish, I could not learn it in high school because they moved WAAAAAY to fast for me I couldnt comprehend anything because the pace was beyond what I could handle. Im graduated now and in the air force, I would like to know of any online programs or software I could but that I could learn the language. And another thing, how long does it usually take some one to learn the language enough to speak it fluently with out much error?

The only way to learn a language quickly is to immerse yourself in native or fluent speakers, but you could probably try Rosetta Stone if you’d rather go the program route (though I hear it’s a little tedious). A good way to learn the language and its colloquialisms is to read books in Spanish or watch films in Spanish with subtitles. It takes time, however

Whether you make errors or not is up to you.

Here’s a few links for you.

To learn the basics…this is supposed to be “just like Rosetta Stone”…I’m not completely convinced, but it’s all communicative methods, and it’s pretty good for the basics.

    Livemocha.com.

If you really want to learn the grammar, so that you can speak accurately, and learn how to say what you want to say, get an online textbook, like About.com…[okay, maybe About doesn't have the Spanish...I'm using it for other languages. You can search around...They have VERY comprehensive grammar lessons in other languages...but right now, I can't find a link]

    or this:

    or this:

Also, go to nosayudamos.com for all sorts of help…set up by a former teacher, it features live chat times a couple of times a week as a group, and you can go on and use the live chat any time you want.

    Sharedtalk.com…part of Rosetta Stone.

And I’m absolutely not sure about this one, but I’ve been checking it out in my spare time.

Oh! also, BBC has some language learning programs.

All of these are free! I have no interest, myself, in paying for anyone to teach me…and you can go at whatever pace works for YOU. You can REPEAT whatever you want to, go back and check past lessons, whatever you need. Really good for that! Livemocha has natives that you contact up with, and use them as tutors, while they use you as a tutor for English.

It’s VERY possible that what you were doing in School simply wasn’t working with your own learning style. Somehow, with all those different resources, I’m confident you’ll find the one that works best for you.

*Edit* Hey! I found the About.com link!

And, for all verb conjugation reference, verbix.com is back up and running…it was down for about a month, but it’s a great resource ofr learning and referencing verb usage.

Buena suerte, and you can contact me for explanations.

Length of time will be determined by the student and how motivated they are. Having a good teacher who knows the language AND grammar makes a big difference.
A lot of people are talking about Rosetta Stone – myself I would suggest being in an environment where you can not only learn it but practise what you learn with native speakers.
